Installing a Microwave Wall Mount
With kitchen space often at a premium, homeowners and renters want to be able to get the most out of their available space. One way of helping to make more space in a kitchen is to build in extra shelving, or to look for wall mounted options. Given that much of the wall space in a given room is dead space, it's a great idea to try to make the most of the space afforded by walls. This is why homeowners look at installing wall-mounted cupboards and display cabinets. It's also one reason why appliances such as bench top dish washers and ovens and their wall-mounted counterparts are becoming increasingly popular. One electrical appliance that frequently takes up quite a bit of space in a kitchen but that is indispensable is a microwave. Fortunately, microwaves often aren't particularly heavy, making them an excellent option for bench top or wall mounting. Installing a microwave wall mount is a great way to make some extra room in your kitchen. Microwaves tend not to be too heavy, meaning that while you can set your microwave out of the way in a cupboard or cabinet, you can also look at mounting them on a wall. You can purchase specialized wall mounts for microwaves, or simply use more general wall mounts and brackets. The shape, size, and weight of a microwave means that while specialized equipment can be handy, other more generalized equipment can do the job equally well. When installing a wall mount for a microwave, first consider the area where you want to place it. A wall mount tends to comprise a series of brackets, and sometimes shelves or supporting bolts. You'll need to take this into account when considering where you want to install your microwave. In addition, you should see whether you microwave will 'hang' from the base of a cabinet, which is common for wall mounts that rely on weight-bearing bolts, or whether it will sit on a series of shelving. This will affect where you are able to install your shelving and wall mounts. When installing your wall mount, bear in mind that you may need to be careful about where you place brackets or screws. Try to aim for an area where the weight of the microwave can be adequately supported. For example, aim to drill holes or mount brackets into a wall stud rather than directly into plaster. Even a fairly light item such as a microwave can drag tears or holes through thin plaster. It's essential to consider the area where you'll be mounting your microwave. |
